Onir reveals that Pritam behaved in an UNPROFESSIONAL way while working on Bas Ek Pal’s music: “He had canceled the recording saying he was sick, but he was actually recording for a YRF movie”: Bollywood News
Last month, famous filmmaker Onir released his memoir, titled “I am Onir and I am gay”. Co-written by his sister Irene Dhar Malik, the book highlights several aspects and episodes of his professional career and the bond he has forged with artists in the industry. One of those ties he talks about briefly is the one he had with musical director Pritam Chakraborty.
Onir Reveals Pritam Behaved UNPROFESSIONALLY While Working On Bas Ek Pal’s Music: “He Had Canceled The Recording Saying He Was Sick, But He Was Actually Recording For A YRF Movie”
Onir revealed that he met Pritam in the early 90s at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, where Irene was studying. Once the siblings moved to a flat in Chium Village, Mumbai in 1994, many friends from FTII visited them, including Pritam. During one of their meetings in the house, Pritam had sung the song ‘Alvida Alvida Ab Kehna Aur Kya’. The music composer promised Onir that he would let him use the song one day.
Onir then recounted that he, Pritam Chakraborty and their friend named Sumit Dasgupta had several times planchette sessions in his house. Once, the “spirit” of a murdered sex worker “appeared”. She predicted that things would go wrong with Pritam’s next trip to Calcutta and that he would reach his destination 24 hours late. Onir then shocked readers by writing that, as expected, the train that was supposed to arrive at Dadar station at 6 a.m. arrived at 4 p.m. During the trip, Pritam’s new Nike shoes were stolen. The train was rerouted following an accident and only reached Calcutta the next day, almost 24 hours late!
The other incident mentioned by Onir in the book is when he signed Pritam Chakraborty for his second directing venture, Stockings Ek Pal (2006), with Sanjay Suri, Jimmy Sheirgill, Juhi Chawla and Urmila Matondkar. The musical director composed the song ‘Hai Ishq’, sung by KK and Sunidhi Chauhan. The second song was ‘Alvida Alvida’, which Pritam had promised to give him. Onir said he wanted the audio for the second song ready as he had to shoot the song. Unfortunately, Pritam kept canceling dates, citing one excuse or another.
Onir wrote, “One of the days when he canceled the recording saying he was sick, my producer (Shaailesh R Singh) told me that he was actually recording at YRF Studio for one of their productions! Pritam Chakraborty, in his defense, said Onir misunderstood. However, the filmmaker was hurt though he also wrote that he was happy to do bigger productions and finally achieved incredible success.
Meanwhile, musical director Mithoon came on board. He was only 19 years old and he composed the title song as well as ‘Ter Bin’. The latter was sung by Atif Aslam and became one of the biggest hits of that year.
Despite the aforementioned episode, Onir remained in contact with Pritam. He reveals: “I can’t wait to work with Pritam again for my next film. We are“. He also made it clear that there was no bitterness and that he came for all his film screenings. Their mothers are also close friends.
As for ‘Alvida Alvida’he ended up at Anurag Basu Life in a subway (2007).
