Eva Longoria Baston, Reese Witherspoon, Pink Tackle Texas Abortion Law
The celebrity reactions were part of a flood of responses after the U.S. Supreme Court refused to block the bill at the eleventh hour.
Texas law makes no exceptions for rape or incest. The only exception is if there is a danger to the health of the woman.
While similar laws have been passed in a dozen conservative Republican-led states, all have been blocked by the courts.
Pro-choice supporters say the Supreme Court’s refusal to intervene to block the bill jeopardizes rights that have been enshrined in U.S. law since a landmark case in 1973.
“The overnight Supreme Court ruling is an unprecedented attack on a woman’s constitutional rights under Roe v. Wade, which has been the law of the land for nearly fifty years,” President Joe said Biden in a statement.
The law in Republicans-dominated Texas is particularly controversial because it allows members of the public to sue physicians who perform abortions, with physicians liable up to US $ 10,000 for each procedure they perform.
Abortion is a key issue in the United States, eliciting strong backlash from both sides.
The Texas law is one of a series of state-level measures looming as Republican-dominated legislatures seek to establish rules with which polls indicate a majority of Americans disagree.
