Four Hong Kong films won a total of nine accolades at the 59th Golden Horse Awards in Taipei on Saturday night.

Dubbed the Oscars in the Chinese language, it was the fourth year that the Taiwanese event was boycotted by Beijing. Cheang’s crime thriller Limbo – which was nominated for 14 awards – won in the categories of Best Cinematography, Adapted Screenplay, Visual Effects and Art Direction. He won the most awards of the night.

Best Visual Effects winners Ho Man-lok and Diu King-wai attended the ceremony, while winners of Best Cinematography Cheng Siu-keung, Best Art Direction Renee Wong and Best Adapted Screenplay Shum Kwan-sin did not attend the awards.

Among those who starred in Limbo, only Mason Lee, a Taiwanese-American actor and son of Oscar-winning director Ang Lee, was present.

In a September letter, the Hong Kong Film Industry Association urged its members to “think twice” before joining the “politicized” Golden Horse event.

Most mainstream Chinese and Hong Kong movie stars shunned the event after a Taiwanese director voiced his support for the island’s independence at the awards show in 2018.

For good problem actress Zuri Adele, the last thing wellness should be is exclusive. And that goes for beauty too.

Accessing affordable options in the wellness space can often be challenging for historically marginalized communities. How much does this therapy session cost without insurance? Or that yoga class? These financial hurdles are something the 32-year-old wants to rethink.

“To create more accessibility to wellness for communities that have historically been marginalized and unsupported,” Adele told In The Know by Yahoo at MAKERS Conference in Dana Point, Calif., where she was a speaker, “we can lean into repairs, and we can start creating avenues of wellness that people who maybe can’t afford their wellness practices- be can always come [to] and practice.”

In addition to donation-based care, what this could look like, according to Adele, are scholarships or “energy exchanges”, where something other than money (teaching, for example) can be exchanged for wellness treatment.

The goal, she said, is to “create this access to wellness practices, wellness classes, teacher trainings, so that we can become those leaders and teachers in those spaces to that this practice may feel most accessible to communities”.

Some of this access, arguably a large part, also applies to the world of beauty – and this is representation.

After all, seeing yourself, or someone like you, providing much-needed care or showing another standard of beauty can help connection and self-esteem. Representation can also provide an element of safety for underrepresented communities.

“Representation is crucial in the wellness space because we create the atmosphere that makes us feel the safest,” Adele explained. “Whether we choose the music that uplifts us ancestrally, or we burn off certain elements, or even use references that won’t be culturally triggering, when we have frontline representation of the teaching staff of these wellness spaces. be. , we ensure that these wellness spaces are safe spaces for everyone.

For beauty, it’s about reframing the current Eurocentric beauty standard and embracing what makes us different.

“We can continue to affirm the beauty of each other, affirm our differences and simply dare to express ourselves in the way that gives us the most confidence in ourselves, whatever it is, without judgement”,

While the media has been slow to embrace different forms of beauty, Adele is optimistic.

“When I think of television and film, I see people working behind the scenes in media, these groups are increasingly including people of color,” she shared. “And so the more we do that, I think the more perspectives we get on what’s happening in our storytelling from really authentic and inclusive spaces.”

This can have a huge impact on viewers consuming this content, hopefully opening up opportunities for greater understanding and self-confidence.

“If we love our curls, we love our locs, we love our dark brown skin, whatever it is,” Adele said, “as long as we continue to lean into it without questioning it based on what society says or shows us, we will be on the right track.

Susan Tolsky, the comic actress who shone as the seductive Biddie Cloom on Here come the brides and like the shy secretary Bernadette Van Gilder on At Miss’s, is dead. She was 79 years old.

Tolsky died Oct. 9 of natural causes at her Toluca Lake home in Los Angeles, her sister, Noel Foreman, said. The Hollywood Reporter.

Tolsky also portrayed a high school football coach’s secretary (Rock Hudson) having sex with students in Roger Vadim. Pretty maids right away (1971) and was a regular performer on Bill Cosby’s New Showa 1972-1973 CBS variety show produced by laugh legend George Schlatter.

“I realized a long time ago that men don’t stare at me and gasp and go crazy,” the Texas native said. “But at least I’m not worried about turning 40.”

Tolsky got a lot of laughs as the goofy Biddie on ABC Here come the brideswhich ran for two seasons (1968-70) and was loosely based on the Mercer Girls, who were brought to the boomtown of Seattle in the 1860s to work as teachers.

It was the television interview that confirmed everything. When Diana, Princess of Wales, agreed to join Martin Bashir at the Guy Fawkes night in front of the BBC cameras to talk about his feelings of marital betrayal and loneliness, the foundations of the British establishment shook. The broadcast of that fateful interview was of course also a time of personal pain and grief for Prince Charles, now King Charles, and their two sons, William and Harry.

The BBC has since agreed never to show the Panorama 1995 program because of the deceitful way in which Bashir obtained the involvement of the late princess, mislead her into suspecting her of widespread betrayal against him. But now, contrary to the wishes of the royal family, the manufacturers of The crownNetflix’s award-winning drama, has faithfully recreated the infamous encounter and is set to show its key moments, as well as broadcast context, over two episodes of the upcoming fifth season, which begins Wednesday.

In the center of the row on the interview reproduction is Prasanna Puwanarajah, who plays Bashir. Addressing the Observerthe actor confided that he was not shocked to see the Panorama dialogues in the script. “What interested me was how we would see the interview in the episode. I wanted to understand how it would work,” he said. “Then I saw that it was about present parts of it for other characters to react to.”

Puwanarajah plays these controversial scenes opposite Elisabeth Debickicast like Diana in this, the finale Crown season to cover the life of the princess. Both actors worked with voice and movement coaches to create an accurate version of TV footage that has been seen many times around the world. “We watched the way they sit. We worked hard on elements viewers will already know to get the kind of observational verisimilitude that means they won’t notice it while they’re watching,” Puwanarajah said.

Was he concerned, given this persuasive level of detail, that there would be little difference from the broadcast of the original interview? “I understand that argument, but the flip side is that because the real footage is so familiar, it would have been awkward if we hadn’t done it with precision. The whole program is now part of the fabric of our collective knowledge, of our history, and not doing it right would have been to take the audience out of an important dramatic moment.

Puwanarajah did not ask to meet Bashir, the former BBC correspondent for religious affairs. Instead, he studied footage from the reporter’s notable on-screen interviews, including one with Michael Jackson. “I didn’t discuss it with Peter Morgan, the writer, but I used what was valuable in what we all learned. In any situation, regardless of the significance of the events, people live in their own human-sized reality. So, during rehearsals, we tried to find out how these two people, Diana and Bashir, decided that they needed each other for the next stage of their lives. We had to figure out how to dramatize it, but we took no moral position. It was a complicated set of circumstances, but at the heart of it all is a well-documented act of deception. Though there’s also a lot we’ll never know for sure, which is pretty haunting.

Morganwho created The crown for Netflix, was praised early in his career for recreating a television interview between US President Richard Nixon and David Frost in his first play, Frost/Nixon, later to be filmed. He was also on set for much of the filming of Bashir’s on-screen encounter with Diana. “Peter is not a sensationalist. He’s almost an anthropologist, I think. He’s always been a conscious playwright and he steps carefully into that liminal space between public notorious events and what people have done in private,” Puwanarajah said.

The actor, who has just made his first film, ballywalterbelieves recent calls for disclaimers on Netflix trailers for season 5 of The crown are beside the point. The ruling, demanded in response to John Major’s complaints of “malicious nonsense” elsewhere in the script, assumes the audience is stupid, Puwanarajah believes. “People understand it’s dramatization,” he said. “And there’s something about the wider footprint of this show that actually paints a pretty sympathetic picture of the royal family’s complicated existence. It broadened an emotional understanding of them.

The episodes dealing with Bashir’s attempt to get the interview also address the BBC’s handling of the issue, dramatizing the battles in boardrooms between the traditionalist chairman, Marmaduke Hussey, and John Birt, the chief modernization officer in charge of production. As a top Netflix product, The crown also takes advantage of these scenes to highlight the emerging threat to the BBC posed by all the satellite channels and streaming services to come.

Bashir is shown lying to Earl Spencer, Diana’s brother, presenting him with forged documents created to make it look like she was being duped by her staff and being watched by the Secret Service. After last year damning Dyson reportthe BBC announced that it would not even show the extracts from the Panorama interview again without clear context. The decision follows complaints from Prince William, who said Bashir’s deception had accelerated his parents’ divorce, and his brother, the Duke of Sussex, who claimed the interview had lost his mother’s life. . The Duke has since signed a £112million deal with Netflix, which is making a documentary about his life with Meghan.

Puwanarajah, a familiar face from TV series Patrick Melrose and ten percent, hopes Bashir’s episodes will shed light on lingering problems within public institutions and the media. Not the least is the issue of racial discrimination, which along with class played a role in the Bashir saga, he believes. “There was a distrust of outsiders at the BBC which is part of what happened. Bashir’s ambitious actions are part of a documented lineage of ethical misconduct in journalism, but the subterfuge was detected in his Despite seemingly incremental progress, race-related issues persist in our institutions,” he said.

Players new movie which had its world premiere in Belfast on Thursday, deals with mental illness and depression and stars Patrick Kielty as a man trying to restart his life with an evening class in stand-up comedy. Puwanarajah plans to direct again, but is currently filming as an actor on Repaymenta thriller produced by Jed Mercurio set in Glasgow and written by Debbie O’Malley.

Join us for a commemorative evening honoring the artists featured in the exhibitions Native American Art: The Charles and Valérie Diker Collection and water memoriesand to celebrate four years of Native American arts programming in the Met’s American Wing.

Renowned author and premier Jingle Dress researcher Dr. Brenda Child (Red Lake Ojibwe) and Patricia Marroquin Norby (Purépecha), Associate Curator of Native American Art, The Met recognize the history and healing impact of traditions Native American aesthetics in times of pandemic. These artistic practices, including Jingle Dress art, music and dance, have always been a source of strength and revitalization for Indigenous communities. This conversation features a special virtual appearance from Robbie Robertson (Mohawk and Cayuga of Six Nations), acclaimed musician, songwriter, author and actor. The program includes a festive Jingle Dress dance accompanied by the Silvercloud Singers.

For over a century, Anishinaabe communities in the United States and Canada have honored the jingle dresses of Ojibwe women for their healing properties. The dress originated during the 1918 flu pandemic, when many Native American and Indigenous communities, affected by the virus, turned to the Jingle Dance as a source of prayer and comfort. During the dance, the dancers move together, causing the metallic cones adorning their dresses to create a soothing, rhythmic sound. Each dress is unique and highly appreciated for its original aesthetic design.

This program was made possible by Barry Appleton and the Jerome Levy Foundation, in memory of Marvin Schwartz, with the generous support of the Consulate General of Canada in New York.

Free with museum admission, although advance registration is required. Please note: For free programs, we generally over-record to guarantee a full house. Priority will be given to those who register in advance, although registering in advance does not guarantee admission once the auditorium has reached capacity.
